An Old Breed for an Old Continent     -     A new Match!


2012 is the 8th year of a new initiative - to bring to Australia

one of the fast growing breeds of Cattle in Southern Africa,

the Nguni (Bos taurus africanus)


This ancient breed has the benefit of more than 6000 years of natural cleansing of the gene pool in often harsh and hostile conditions by pastoralists on the African Continent. This resulted in a breed of cattle with the remarkable combination of disease resistance, ideal body mass, tender beef, high fertility and as a bonus: pleasure of handling. For many years British and European orientated farmers in Africa looked down on the Nguni, only recently to discover the virtues of a true custodian breed ...


But why is this such a timely solution for the Australian industry?


 
Dr Gawie Roux (Pronounced “Harvey Roo”) Author of this Web Publication & owner of Genesis Farm Kennedy Valley, North Queensland, Australia I had my first true introduction to the virtues of the Nguni as a young lad in South Africa. I was hiking through the hills of the Transkei when a Xhosa Induna (headman) called on me to share in a feast of his kraal (homestead) and friends. It was early morning. They killed an Nguni the previous evening. Fresh meat was indiscriminately cut and charred in the flames of an open fire. I did not want to embarrass my host with excessive chewing. I reached for my pocket knife in order to slice the tough meat. When the Induna noticed my plan he waved at me to put the knife away. He explained that I won’t need it... All the men laughed and nodded their heads in agreement. I then enjoyed the most tender beef I ever had until the age of 18 yrs (despite growing up with cattle!) - without a knife and fork!
